Casey Stafford: All I would say the difference is its a little bit bigger speck in my opinion. I forget the dates this year, but it usually starts like the tenth, twelfth somewhere in February and goes for five days. They hunted bears and pigs primarily in California. California Sprig. I really dont think we would have that much more impact on the species period. We were in a zone that we couldnt shoot specklebellies. You drive down the highway, theyre on 99, and in that certain stretch between Franklin and Bridge Street, you may see a hundred on the side of the road. Ramsey Russell: And you were telling me this morning youre the original, that thing is at least thirty, forty years old. And then they would start showing up, and they would end up down here in big piles. Its a little bit bigger, its a bigger flash. And the funny thing is about all that, you can see everybody fight and argue in the country, divided and everything else. Its got the trees in it, its got the cattails. My understanding, and I dont know for a fact, but my understanding is that was not originally a specklebellies zone, it was a zone created to protect Aleutian Canada Geese, which now the limits ten. And we didnt have no money. Ramsey Russell: I love people that do stuff like this, but theres a lot of guys making straps, making totes, making stuff like that. And we had talked about clouds of pintails you all have, well talk about that in a little bit, clouds of pintails you all have been seeing, for whatever reason they didnt fly this morning, but is that pretty much it? I was surprised because we had stopped somewhere along the way as were coming in, we had stopped and rolled down the windows and listened, and I heard tons of pintails that I really expected to see. I shut it off. Casey Stafford: Theyre stone dead. Nearby Wildlife Management Areas and refuges include Dave . And I use it. Casey Stafford: There was a couple guys making them, but they couldnt keep up with- You know how duck hunters are, somethings working, you got to have it. This refuge is home to millions of migratory waterfowl each year. Casey Stafford: Yeah, that was his gig. And they continued to do that and continued to do that until the shell was full, and then theyd cramp it, and then thats what theyd shoot when the geese jumped up, theyd shoot that into it and itd get out there and stretch out and take off wings and heads and necks and all kinds of stuff. And I asked them a long time ago how that all came into being, and he didnt describe exactly what we hunted over today, but something very similar. Guided ducks hunts are the way to go for the best hunting experience. I dont see much better. Whats up with that? Trust is earned. And in my mind, one of the most important parts. Heres what Im trying to say, we were in a zone that you cant shoot any (white-fronted geese) specklebellies and yet, everybody I know wants to come to California because the specklebelly limit is ten. Hell, when I was ten years old, thats all I wanted to do. She and her husband basically took care of all the boys and the girls, and raised them. The California Waterfowl Hunt Program provides access to 60,000 acres of private land including some of the most prestigious duck clubs in the country to hunters of all ages and abilities. Casey Stafford: The CICC is the Colusa Indian Community Council. The property is surrounded by the most famous duck clubs on the west coast. But if they really want to have a conservation order and have some effect on these birds, we could help here if they would open this thing up. We were still burning then in the eighties, nineties, early nineties. And then as the morning went on, they started getting restless, and we started picking off birds. I think it just comes down to ease of packing it around. And I tell my clients, I tell the guys that lease from me all the time, I said, You guys, why are you doing that? Thats the cheapest part of hunting. That says a lot to me. And I can remember getting out of the pick-up, my uncle telling me, Now go down that ditch, and my dad laughed, And when you get down there and get even with them, take a shotgun shell and tap your gun barrel, and they all shut up. And I thought, Oh come on. And I remember when I finally got it right, I crawled right in the middle of this field and got in the middle, and there was birds on each side of me and I thought, Well, well see. I grabbed a shotgun shell and tapped my gun barrel, and Ill be damned if every bird in that field didnt go silent and its head go straight up in the air. Some of the marginal rice ground, or I shouldnt say even marginal rice ground, its probably better ground suited for something else that used to be in rice. All my duck blinds, the one we hunted today, like I was telling you this morning, Id already pulled like five hundred decoys this week just because the ducks were starting to not like the big spreads, and were skirting them, but we start the season typically with about five hundred goose floaters at every duck blind and a couple hundred duck decoys.
